Antique Chinese Wooden Abacus - Primitive Calculator, Estimated 1900
Hand-crafted hardwood frame joined with iron straps and bamboo rods, this early 20th-century Chinese suanpan features the uncommon 1-over-5 bead configuration (one “heaven" bead above the reckoning bar, five "earth" beads below). The turned wooden beads slide smoothly and retain a warm honey patina; the frame shows honest wear, traces of old paint, and small losses that testify to long service in a merchant's shop. All parts are original, including the metal corner plates and repair strap visible on one side.
Sound and sturdy with age-related surface marks, mild shrinkage cracks, and scattered finish loss; beads move freely. A distinctive decorative accent and fully functional teaching tool that illustrates pre-digital calculation and Chinese mathematical heritage.
