19th Century Cast Iron Firemark Plaque by Associated Firemen's Insurance Company. Washington D.C., 1848

This believed to be rare 19th-century cast iron firemark plaque was produced by the Associated Firemen'S Insurance Company, founded in Washington; D.C. in 1848. Designed to be mounted on insured buildings, firemarks like this one served both as advertising and as a signal to local fire brigades that the property was protected under a particular insurer.

The raised, hand-painted relief features a dynamic depiction of a uniformed firefighter in mOrion dressed in a red coat and blue trousers, carrying a flaming torch and hoisting a bugle with the sound being shaped like a banner inscribed with the word "FIRE." The figure is cast in high relief and painted in original polychrome, now exhibiting desirable age related patina and flaking consistent with authentic 19th-century examples.

The reverse is clear marked with raised lettering: "ASSOCIATED FIREMEN'S INS CO. 1848" along the inner curve, and includes the model or casting number "3700.” The plaque is believed to be made of solid cast iron and retains its original form and surface, with two pre-drilled mounting holes at top and bottom for affixing to wood or masonry.

These early American fire marks were once practical indicators of fire  coverage but are now highly collectible folk art and historical artifacts. This piece stands out forits bold composition, vivid original paint, and clear manufacturer markings-making it a significant addition for collectors of firefighting memorabilia, architectural salvage, or early American insurance history. Structurally sound with scattered surface wear and paint loss throughout; consistent with age and outdoor exposure. Mounting holes intact.
