Some Tips in creating a cohesive and authentic mid-century modern design for your home that reflects your personal style and appreciation.

Some Tips in creating a cohesive and authentic mid-century modern design for your home that reflects your personal style and appreciation.

We started our retail store at the start of the pandemic in late 2019 with a focus on art, decor, and furniture from the Victorian (~1880-1930), Mid Century (~1930-1970), and Contemporary (~1970-2020) Periods. We recently started a new Makers Market right next door featuring handmade art and decor from 80+ local Seattle and Portland Artists.
We source our vintage items via our vendors who import goods from all over the world (Denmark, UK, India, etc.) and we also source items via local marketplace. We handpick items mostly based on personal design appeal and aesthetic.
Bringing home mid-century modern style can be easy, but as with any style, can seem daunting. Below are some tips for individuals attempting to achieve this design aesthetic:
  1. Research and Familiarize Yourself: Before diving into the design process, take some time to research and familiarize yourself with mid-century modern design principles, iconic furniture pieces, color palettes, and overall aesthetic. Look at books, online resources, and visit mid-century modern homes and museums to gain inspiration and a deeper understanding of the style.
  2. Start with Key Furniture Pieces: Begin by selecting key mid-century modern furniture pieces that will anchor your design. Items such as a classic sofa, lounge chair, or a statement coffee table can set the tone for the entire space. Consider investing in high-quality, authentic mid-century modern pieces or high-quality reproductions from reputable sources.
  3. Embrace Minimalism: Mid-century modern design emphasizes minimalism and functionality. Avoid clutter and opt for clean, uncluttered spaces. Focus on quality over quantity when selecting furniture and decor pieces for your home.
  4. Mix Vintage and Modern: While mid-century modern design is rooted in the past, don't be afraid to mix vintage pieces with modern elements to create a fresh, updated look. Consider blending mid-century modern furniture with contemporary art, lighting, or accessories to add a modern twist to the design.
  5. Pay Attention to Materials and Textures: Mid-century modern design often incorporates natural materials such as wood, leather, and metal. Pay attention to the textures and finishes of furniture and decor items to ensure they align with the mid-century modern aesthetic.
  6. Consider Color and Pattern: Embrace the iconic color palette of mid-century modern design, which includes bold, earthy tones and vibrant accent colors. Additionally, don't shy away from incorporating retro-inspired patterns and prints in your textiles and decor to add visual interest to the space.
  7. Balance Form and Function: Mid-century modern design is known for its marriage of form and function. When selecting furniture and decor, prioritize pieces that are both visually striking and practical for everyday use.
  8. Pay Attention to Lighting: Lighting plays a crucial role in mid-century modern design. Incorporate statement lighting fixtures such as iconic pendant lights, floor lamps, and sconces to add warmth and visual interest to the space.
  9. Personalize the Space: While staying true to mid-century modern principles, don't forget to infuse the space with your personal style and touches. Incorporate meaningful artwork, family heirlooms, or unique decor pieces that reflect your personality and tastes.
  10. Take Your Time: Designing a home in the mid-century modern style is a process that takes time and careful consideration. Take your time to curate and select pieces that resonate with you and contribute to the overall aesthetic you want to achieve.
By following these tips, you can create a cohesive and authentic mid-century modern design for your home that reflects your personal style and appreciation.
